Dan surprised me for my birthday with a super cool GPS unit to go Geo caching. I just heard of the sport about a year ago but its a worldwide phenomenon. The gist of it is someone will hide a container(big or small) someone in a city, woods, field, etc., and view the coordinates on their GPS, then they will program it into the website www.geocaching.com and for us "seekers" we just punch in our zip code and it will tell you where the closest caches are. Its amazing how many are in and around just our area. There are over 20 within a 5 mile radius of our house. It seems rather easy but let me tell you, its harder than you might think. The GPS will get you usually within about 5-10ft of the cache but then its up to you to search high and low for it. We have found 4 of the 7 that we have looked for and they have all been "easy" on the degree of difficulty scale. Once you find it there is usually a log book (unless its a smaller sized cache) that you can log the date you found it and other small treasures that you can trade. We came across one cache that people had been finding since 2001. The best thing about it for me is that Dan, Nathan, and I get to be outside together. Dan says he likes it better than just plain hiking because it actually has a purpose, and I'm not going to turn down any chance to get outside. Its also great to go with friends; as you can see in the pics we went out with some of our best friends, the Wrights this weekend. Russel has been before and is much better at reading the GPS and Shireen is our expert "seeker" because she found at least 2 of the 3 caches this weekend. Sweet Rhys was calm and cozy the whole time up against his daddy. We hope both our boys grow up to love the outdoors as much as we do.
